How to Clean That | Salsa Edition
Game day snacks are non-negotiable. Salsa spills, unfortunately, are part of the deal.
Tomato-based stains are some of the most stubborn we see, especially on upholstery and area rugs. Salsa is not a single stain, it’s a mix of dyes, oils, and acids, which means the wrong move can permanently set it into the fibers.
The good news is that with the right approach, you can often stop the damage before it becomes a bigger problem.
Here’s how to handle a salsa spill the right way.
Step 1: Remove solids immediately
Use a spoon or dull knife to gently lift away any chunks.
Work from the outside of the spill toward the center.
Avoid pressing or smearing the stain deeper into the fibers.
Step 2: Blot with paper towels, never rub
Use white paper towels to blot the area.
Paper towels absorb better and are gentler on fibers. If you rub too aggressively, they fall apart, which helps prevent damage. Terry towels, on the other hand, can distort or fuzz upholstery fibers.
Press straight down, lift, and repeat.
Rotate towels often until no more color transfers.
Step 3: Use cold water only
Lightly dampen a paper towel with cold water and blot the stain.
Do not pour water directly onto the fabric.
Keep moisture controlled and localized to avoid spreading the stain.
Hot water can permanently set tomato pigments, so always stay cold.
Step 4: Mix a gentle cleaning solution
In a bowl, combine:
2 cups cold water
1/8 teaspoon clear dish soap
Stir gently. You want minimal suds and no additives, dyes, or fragrances.
Step 5: Apply the solution carefully
Lightly dampen a paper towel with the solution and blot the stain.
Start at the outer edge and work inward using short, controlled presses.
Blot for 30 to 60 seconds, then pause and assess.
Avoid over-saturating the fabric.
Step 6: Rinse properly
Many people skip this step, but it matters.
Use a clean paper towel dampened with plain cold water to blot away soap residue.
Leftover soap can attract dirt and create discoloration over time.
Step 7: Dry evenly
Use a hair dryer on a medium heat setting.
Hold it several inches away and keep the air moving to dry the area evenly.
This helps prevent watermarking and rings.
Important reminders
Always check the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions before treating any fabric or rug. Some materials require specific care and should never be treated with water or household cleaners.
