Learn about VELVET to help with your selection process.

✓ WHAT IS VELVET?

Velvet is a type of pile weave that constitutes a significant percentage of the upholstery fabric market. Velvet refers to the specific method of fabric construction. This luxurious material can be crafted from a diverse array of fibers and blends, including cotton, rayon, silk, mohair, linen, and synthetic materials.

✓ CLEANABILITY

Velvet fabrics of different pile fibers have very different responses to cleaning.

Soils and stains and the steps taken to remove them can sometimes cause uncorrectable distortion resulting in an uneven appearance.

Some velvets will be dry clean only and others can be cleaned with water. A professional cleaner is recommended.

✓ TYPES OF VELVET

  • Cotton velvet tends to be the most forgiving and easy to maintain.

  • Silk and Rayon Velvets are quite beautiful for their elegance but are most prone to pile distortion.

  • Linen velvet is quite beautiful as well but will also distort and wrinkle.

  • Synthetic velvets, such as polyester can be easy to maintain.

RECOMMENDATIONS WHEN SELECTING VELVET:

  • The primary factor to consider when choosing velvets is the fiber content. It's crucial to select accordingly based on the room's intended use and the client's tolerance for potential patina in velvet.

  • In terms of upkeep, opting for a protective treatment like Fiber-Seal, coupled with available spot-cleaning services, significantly contributes to effective maintenance.
