Learn about SILK to help with your selection process.

✓  WHAT IS SILK?
Silk is a protein fiber that is extruded by the silkworm when constructing its cocoon. Silk is coveted for its elegance, texture, and luster but must be used in the proper setting.

  • ✓ CLEANABILITY

  • Contrary to what many people think, silk is one of the most clean-able fabrics available.

  • Most silk can be both wet and dry-cleaned.

  • Of course, testing is a must, as always.

  • Additionally, while full cleaning silk is not an issue, spot-cleaning silk can be challenging as it is prone to ringing.

  • Embossed silks can only be dry-cleaned as water-based cleaners can cause the design to disappear.

    ✓ GENERAL CARE

  • It is important to reverse cushions on a regular basis so that fading or yellowing will happen more evenly.

  • Silk window treatments should be lined and interlined.

RECOMMENDATIONS WHEN SELECTING SILK:

Silk must be used in the proper locations. Lighting is one of the critical factors to consider before using silk as a floor covering or on upholstery.
Dyed silk has a tendency to fade in sunlight both direct and indirect.
White silk tends to become yellow with age.
It is most important to consider light sources when specifying silk.
