Often when you are working on a project, there are so many elements that you must consider it is difficult to be an expert in everything.  At Fiber-Seal, we are textile experts and are here to support you. Learn about LINEN to help with your selection process.

 ✓  WHAT IS LINEN?
Linen is a natural cellulosic fiber derived from the flax plant. It is made from the stem of the plant. France is the major producer of flax. It is generally agreed that the best linen fiber comes from northern France, Belgium, and The Netherlands.

✓ CLEANABILITY
Most linen fabrics are labeled "S" cleaning code, which means dry clean only with solvents. However, solvents won't remove water-based spills or heavy soiling. We find that the majority of linen fabrics can be cleaned with water-based methods by an experienced upholstery cleaner who understands fine fabrics.

Pre-testing must always be performed before cleaning to check for potential problems.

✓ TYPES OF LINEN
Linen Velvets are especially elegant and beautiful - however, shading and crushing are always something to know about with velvets.
Glazed Linen is somewhat glossy - also quite beautiful but semi-durable. They dull with day-to-day use and cleaning.
Natural Linen - undyed can brown when cleaned with water - this can truly be a dry clean only fabric.

RECOMMENDATIONS WHEN SELECTING LINEN:

  • It is very important to consider the use of the room and item before choosing a fabric or floor covering.

  • Test the samples that you are considering for cleanability before making your final selections.

For more comprehensive information - see our TEXTILE TIP (Print and keep for reference).

Don't hesitate to contact us for questions as you are making your selections; we can advise on the cleanability of the fabric. We are also happy to protect the samples that you are considering.
