Inside Brushy Ridge: How Studio KC Interiors Transformed a Blank Room into a Modern Lounge

At FiberSeal, we get an inside look at some truly remarkable spaces through the designers we partner with, and the Brushy Ridge living room is one of those standout transformations.

Crafted by designer Katie Canfield of Studio KC Interiors, this living room didn’t start with character. In fact, it barely started at all. The room was a blank white box, untouched and unused, begging for a reason to exist. When Katie stepped inside for the first time, she immediately saw what it could become rather than what it was.

The clients had just moved from a historic home full of charm and soul. Their new space, while beautiful, lacked the architecture and richness they were used to. So they gave Katie one clear direction, something designers rarely hear so directly:

“We want a kid free zone. A place for us. A place that feels special.”

And with that, a quiet, underutilized room began its evolution into a moody, masculine, architectural escape.

A Blank Canvas Turned Architectural Jewel

Katie started with what the room didn’t have, which was almost everything.

No paneling, no molding, no depth, no presence.

She built it piece by piece:

• Two-piece crown molding that elevated the ceiling line

• Applied wall moldings that added dimension

• Saturated color that boldly abandoned resale-safe neutrals

• Lighting, texture, and layers that evoked a tailored lounge without feeling theme-y

“I love when clients go all in,” Katie told us. “Most people get scared by color. These clients leaned into it,

Where Menswear Meets Comfort

The design direction clicked the moment she landed on the Chesterfield sofas. The husband specifically wanted leather, so Katie honed in on that perfect caramel tone—warm but not orange, lived-in but not distressed.

From there, she layered in:

• Wool drapery for that menswear suiting feel

• A plaid area rug to ground the room

• Velvet for mood and touchable texture

• Tailored silhouettes to keep everything crisp and intentional

The result is the kind of room that looks like it smells faintly of good whiskey and old books, but still feels inviting enough to sink into.

And despite the “kid free zone” proclamation, reality made its entrance fast:

“Within a week,” Katie laughed, “their daughter was already in there putting her hands on the velvet swivel chairs. It’s always something.”

We can feel Interior Designers everywhere, nodding.

A Space Meant to Be Lived In

Today, the Brushy Ridge living room isn’t a museum. It’s a cocktail room.

A conversation room.

A host-your-friends-and-stay-awhile room.

The velvet has held up beautifully.

The leather has aged the way leather should.

The rug still grounds the space without overpowering it.

And yes, the space was protected.

Katie put it best:

“We don’t let furniture or rugs live in a home without protection anymore.”

Someone is always going to spill something. Designers want their clients to enjoy the homes they create, not tiptoe around them.

A Room Designed to Be Lived In

Like many of Katie’s projects, Brushy Ridge was not just about creating a beautiful room, it was about creating a room the family could actually enjoy. Once the furnishings were selected, layered, and installed, FiberSeal stepped in to build the protection plan that supports the way this home truly functions.

With FiberSeal protection, spills sit on the surface longer instead of soaking in. That small difference makes everyday life much easier and gives homeowners confidence that their investment pieces will stay beautiful for years.

They also received a Spot Cleaning Kit for quick fixes. And when something bigger happens, professional spot cleaning is only a phone call away and included with FiberSeal protection. Whether it is a splash of wine during a gathering or a stray drip of coffee on a quiet morning, the room always has a plan.

For this family, that peace of mind matters. It means they can live in their home, not tiptoe around it. And it creates a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone who walks through the door.

Because a room this beautiful should be enjoyed, not protected from the people who love it.

If you want the same comfort and confidence in your own home, we would love to help.

Curious What Experience Made Katie This Passionate About Protection?

Let’s just say it involves:

• an elderly cat

• a custom rug

• and one designer who found herself cleaning surprise “presents” every time she visited a client’s home
